(UPDATED JUNE, 2019)
For this list, we’ve made sure all of the burgers are under $15. At some point, we’ll do a second list for “high-end” burgers. But for now, we want to focus on affordable, good burgers. The other thing to note about this list is we focused solely on “standard” cheeseburgers, not the fancier varieties that most of these places also offer. So with those caveats in place, here are our favorite burger joints on Maui.
- Teddy’s Bigger Burger (Lahaina)
Teddy’s is a local chain with multiple locations on Oahu and one shop on Maui plus a Maui food truck. They are rapidly expanding into the mainland. The burgers here are simply good. We like to call Teddy’s the In-N-Out/Shake Shake of Maui. It looks like a fast food joint, but the quality is much higher. The sweet potato fries are good, but the tater tots are great! - Cool Cat Cafe (Lahaina)
Consistently rated a favorite burger on Maui, Cool Cat Cafe has a ’50s diner motif, done Maui-style. It’s a (covered) open-air cafe with lots of seating, fun music and lots of TV’s showing the biggest games. The burgers are never frozen, 100% certified Angus Beef served on locally baked buns. Cool Cat is conveniently located on Front Street. (Cool Cat Cafe)
- Nalu’s (Kihei)
A breezy, slightly open-air restaurant, Nalu’s is quietly, one of the most popular restaurants in Kihei. The burgers a big, juicy and use only locally sourced ingredients served on a brioche bun. Nalu’s features live music on most nights and a full bar. While great for lunch and dinner, Nalu’s also dishes out excellent breakfast dishes, some that available all day. (Nalu’s South Shore Grill)
- Cafe Ole’i (Maui Lani and Kihei)
With two Maui locations, Cafe Ole’i offers up a mean burger, made with Maui-grown beef. The shoestring french fries served with the burgers are also outstanding. You can order the burger all day at the Maui Lani location, but the burger is not available on the dinner menu at the Kihei location. Though, if you ask for it, they’ll probably make one for you. - Fatt Chicks Burgers (Makawao/Pukalani)
The roster of food trucks on Maui is growing weekly. You can now find them all over island. For our money, the best burger truck is Fatt Chicks. They have a few options for burgers, but their signature burger is the Korean Burger, a massive half-pound burger with kim chee and kalbi sauce. You can find the truck upcountry, so if you’re headed to Haleakala for the sunrise, on the way back it’s an easy stop. (Fatt Chicks Burgers)
