Whale Tales 2019

Whale Tales 2019 is coming to Maui from February 15 - 18. Hosted by Whale Trust at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Whale Tales is a fully immersive educational (and fun!) weekend featuring marine biologists, whale researchers and award-winning photographers from around the world.

Over the course of the weekend, local whale watch companies are donating their boats and crew for discounted whale watches featuring top marine researchers providing narration. Hawaii Ocean Project is proud to sponsor "Family Day with Jill Mickelsen" on Sunday, February 17th. Hawaii Ocean Project is donating the Maui Princess, Maui's largest and most luxurious yacht, for the event, with 100% of the proceeds going to support Whale Trust. Tickets are being capped at 125 riders (even though the yacht is registered to hold 400 passengers) so you'll have plenty of room to roam and take pictures from both the upper and lower decks. Being such a large boat, the Maui Princess is also the most stable, safest family-friendly boat on Maui. Head on over to the Whale Trust site to book your tickets as this event is sure to sell out.

Beyond whale watches, Whale Tales 2019 is hosting speakers from the Smithsonian, the Whale Trust, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, NOAA and more. Additionally, award-winning photographers from National Geographic and others will be presenting their whale photography portfolios. Finally, be sure to check out the Education & Art Expo and Marine Science Center running throughout the duration of the event.

The Maui-based Whale Trust is a non-profit organization headed by top marine researchers in Hawaii. Unlike other "non-profit" companies who do "research" for PR purposes and to support their very much for profit whale watch tours, the Whale Trust publishes peer-reviewed findings in internationally-acclaimed scientific journals around the world. In their own words "Our scientific focus is on exploring and understanding the natural behavior patterns in whales – the most fascinating, difficult, least understood and least funded area of whale research today."

By purchasing tickets to Whale Tales and the sponsored whale watches, you will be supporting REAL whale research and, of course, the whales themselves.
