Handy Apps to Download for Use on Maui

Whether your on an iPhone or an Android phone, there are great apps to use while you're visiting or living on Maui. We'll assume that you have the national apps like Lyft/Uber, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Airbnb. Instead, we'll focus on apps that are Maui-centric, apps you may delete once you're at the airport to head home. Unless otherwise noted, the apps listed here are for both Android and iOS

Hawaiian Words - Translation and Dictionary
You'll do just fine on Maui without knowing a single word of the Hawaiian language. It's not like you're visiting a foreign country! Most people are familiar with the words "aloha" and by the end of a visit "mahalo" (thank you). But while you're here, you may want to download this free app, which will help you learn a little more about the native culture.

Magic Seaweed Surf Forecast and/or Surfline
We keep two surf forecast apps on our phone... and we don't even surf. We do, however, paddle board regularly and enjoy snorkeling. These two apps are great for any water and beach activities. For families with young children or with weaker swimmers, knowing the size of the waves can be crucial. Magic Seaweed and Surfline also report on wind conditions. Nothing can spoil a beach day more than sand being blown in your eyes or all over your belongings.

Ready Hawaii
Hopefully, you'll never need to use this app, but in case of a natural disaster, Ready Hawaii will keep you informed. Not only will it alert you to weather threats approaching Maui, it also provides maps with evacuation routes once the threat hits the island.

Rider
OK, you didn't rent a car and don't want to deal with ride-sharing apps or taxis. The other way to get around the island is on the bus. Maui's bus system actually does work. You can get almost everywhere on our public transportation system. Unfortunately, 95% of the bus stops actually tell you when the next bus will be coming or where the bus will actually go. That's if you can find the bus stop, at all. Here's where the Rider app comes in. It will help you find the nearest bus stop and not only tell you where the bus is going but it also real-time tracking to tell you when the next bus will arrive.

Wolfram Sun Exposure (iOS only)
This is pretty cool. Or rather, hot! This iPhone app calculates how long you can stay in the sun, which SPF to use, and provides a UV forecast for your location. Yes, it's a bit geeky, but once you put in your information, like your skin type (light skinned, dark skinned, etc.) and the date and time, based on your current location (or a location you can assign), it will tell you exactly how long you should stay in the sun. In other words, it should help prevent a sunburn.
