Best Rainy Day Activities on Maui
While Wailea, Kihei, and Lahaina tend to be dry pretty much year-round, there are still days when it rains. Normally, the rains come in the form of sh...
Cool Cat Cafe (Lahaina)
With a rotating cast of regulars and music ranging from contemporary Hawaiian to classic rock, Cool Cat Cafe is always a fun hang. Along with the music, Cool Cat serves up award-winning burgers and build-your-own milkshakes. With a convenient location on Front Street, you can stand outside and listen to the music. If you like it, walk on up and join the fun.
Down the Hatch (Lahaina)
Voted Best Bar on Maui (again) in Maui Times, in part because it's one of the few (if not only) spots for live music every morning 9;30-11:30am AND every evening from 2-6pm every evening. Located below Cool Cat Cafe (see above), and across from the famous Banyan Tree, Down the Hatch has great food, long happy hours, and fun event every evening like Pajama Parties, Bingo Nights, Fresh Squeezed Fridays, Foosball Nights and lots more.
Fleetwood's on Front Street (Lahaina)
Owned by legendary Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood, you would expect Fleetwood's on Front Street to be a live music mecca. Good news... it is! Even though there are plenty of recurring acts on the schedule, Mick Fleetwood himself does take the stage.
Charley's (Paia)
With the Hard Rock closing its doors on Maui in late 2016, Charley's is the best place to see indie rock bands, local bands and touring club acts on Maui. While most venues on Maui seem to cater to, shall we say, "older" visitors, Charley's is going after younger music fans. With a lively, fun atmosphere, a great bar and good food, Charley's is a good time for locals and visitors alike.
Wai (Wailuku)
Wai, located on Market Street in the heart of Wailuku, is a relative new kid on the block. The bar, and make no mistake about it, it is a bar, has a large dance floor and serves great drinks. They mostly feature DJ's spinning dance music, but they do mix in live performers. The joint is high energy, especially on weekends. They also feature "Gay" nights, trivia and many special events.
Mulligans on the Blue (Wailea)
Mulligans on the Blue is located on the famed Wailea Old Blue Golf Course. But this is no golf clubhouse. Mulligans features live music six days a week. On they seventh day, Mondays, they are closed (except during football season). If you choose one night to visit, make it a Wednesday when Hawaii music pioneer Willie K. is on stage. The man can perform magic with a guitar and his storytelling is legendary. Reservations are required for Willie K. Another highlight is First Friday, which features live country music by local band Kaina Kountry on the first Friday of every month.
Nalu's (Kihei)
For a fun evening with good food, local music and a cool vibe, check out Nalu's. The entertainers, all local and excellent, rotate nightly. It's usually just or two people with guitars and ukuleles performing Hawaiian and Pop music. That said, one of Hawaii's greats, 5-time Grammy nominated Amy Hanaial'i Gilliom now has a standing Wednesday night gig. Reservations are definitely recommended to see her. As an added bonus, the burgers at Nalu's are some of the best on the island.
Casanova (Makawao)
Located upcountry in the fun little town of Makawao, Casanova is primarily known for serving great Italian food. But on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, they host music events. While artists like Willie Nelson, Kool and the Gang, Taj Mahal and Los Lobos have played at Casanova, the focus is on established contemporary Hawaiian bands, as well as and reggae artists. Casanova also mixes in "club" nights featuring DJs.
Friday Block Parties
The Friday Night Block Parties are a great way to visit local communities, sample food from Maui's best food trucks and groove to Maui's top entertainers. Here is where you can find each of the block parties:
1st Friday: Wailuku --- 2nd Friday: Lahaina --- 3rd Friday: Makawao --- 4th Friday: Kihei --- 5th Friday: Lana'i
Hawaii Ocean Project Dinner Cruise (Lahaina)
Where else can you enjoy a three-course, table-served meal with drinks and live music? Nowhere else that we can think of! Maui's top entertainers perform a mix of classic hits, Hawaii-themed music and will even take requests as you enjoy a gorgeous sunset and wonderful meal.
