In a vacation paradise with some of the finest resorts in the world, finding a cheap place to stay on Maui isn't always an easy task. If you're traveling alone or with another person or even a small group, though, one cost-effective place to look is hostels. Maui has a few well placed hostels that are very reasonably priced and fun! Here's a sampling of the top hostels on Maui, broken down by area...

Lahaina
Tiki Beach Hostel
Just a 5 minute walk from Front Street, the Tiki Beach Hostel is centrally located in the tourist hub of Lahaina. Walk out the front door and head to Lahaina's famous restaurants and shops, the wharf and the beach. In the always warm Lahaina, the best part of this hostel is probably the air conditioned rooms, but they also have full kitchens and free wifi. (Tiki Beach Hostel)

Paia
Aloha Surf Hostel
If the main reason you're coming to Maui is for the beach, a few beers and great people watching, Aloha Surf Hostel is probably the one for you. Located in the funky surf town of Paia, everything is in walking distance from this location. However, they also offer daily free tours, including hiking, snorkeling, mingling with the tourists in Lahaina, and out to Hana. With free breakfast, a hot tub, free wifi and more, if you want to experience the laid-back beach town of Paia, this is the place for you. (Aloha Surf Hostel)

Wailuku
Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel
If you're looking for adventure, the Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel should be at the top of your list. The location of the hostel, the Happy Valley neighborhood in Wailuku isn't the greatest, but if all you're planning on doing there is sleeping, this shouldn't be a problem. The hostel offers free wifi and an internet computer, a hot tub, and airport shuttle service. But what really sets it apart is its daily tours. They go everywhere from Hana to Lahaina and everywhere in between, depending on the day. On Friday, they also throw a free keg party. (Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel)

Northshore Hostel
A very popular destination, the Northshore Hostel caters to travelers of all ages. The list of amenities stretches on forever, but we'll list a few: shuttle service to the airport, Iao Valley and the beach; free internet kiosk and wifi; free breakfast; on-site laundry and much more. The folks who run this hostel are very friendly and accommodating. It's the place we recommend when friends are looking for a budget place to stay on Maui. It's located in the center of Wailuku within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. There's free parking, but if you don't have a car, it's right on the bus line. Hana
Joe's Rentals
While not a hostel, Joe's offers affordable rooms with access to a full kitchen. Located in the heart of Hana, you'll find yourself within walking distance of everything the town has to offer, including the beach. Of course, getting out to Hana requires a car, so getting around probably won't be an issue for you. It's not unusual for people who are staying on the west side or Kihei to book a night in Hana so they can take in everything on the Road to Hana without having to drive it all in one day. The house also has a TV room, barbecue and fire pit. (Joe's Rentals)
